When I was younger (WHEN I WAS ...) I used to really like Japanese rock artists but then I grew older and felt that they dropped in quality + got less accessible + my interests sort of just shifted so I stopped listening to them kinda sorta (well I still listen to old faves just don't recognize new bands).

Nowadays my music folder (which is... big.) just has everything from pop music that plays on the radio OR by pop artists + k-pop + 80s Japanese citypop and vaporwave (a current fave) + indie internet electropop/bitpop/future bass/downtempo artists + 70s disco + anime music + assorted Japanese artists and everything in between ; ; ; can't really point a "favorite musician" though as I feel each of them have different qualities and assets. But I don't play an instrument so that might be why I don't have an opinion, just a lot of different favorites in different genres.

i used to listen almost exclusively to opening theme songs from various anime as teenager. Stopped when i entered university. I really dig orchestral arrangements of soundtracks from games nowadays

Ooh. Yeah as I teen I really liked anime soundtracks too but also visual kei bands - some bands I liked played one or two anime songs but I really liked their discographies too. Also Vocaloid utattemita.
But then not unlike American pop I felt that it got lackluster :/ orchestral arrangements are cool on occasion too, really dug VGL back then and nowadays Platina Jazz.

Do you like techno or trance? Dance music is always nice to listen to imo. I had this urge to listen to synthwave a while back. I love that 80s electronic music feel

Though I'm not about techno specifically, some europop/disco/vaporwave are always welcome in my playlists. Even some early 2000s dance/pop are great in my book. As a DDR player they were in my favs for a long time really now

Yeah DDR songs are a blast even today lol. Really liked classics such as Butterfly, ALL Daisuke Asakura remixes and my fav for playing Kind Lady :)

do you know when the ddr fad went away? I remember it was huge like 15-20 years ago. I think ddr still has fans tho, right?

I listen to almost everything so long as it sounds good. That means from stuff like J-Pop all the way to death metal.

In terms of composers, I really like Yasunori Mitsuda, Hiroyuki Sawano and Kajiura Yuki. The reason being is they are versatile and it's hard to pigeon hole what genre they are. The way they blend and bend genres is mind boggling.

Hmmm, yeah it quickly faded away after that. IIRC some machines were switched for the cheaper Korean alternative Pump it Up and then arcades in shopping malls kinda stopped being a thing so by 2010 they were no more. Recall seeing these machines at every anime con until 2009 tops but by the time I got into it - that was 2012 thanks mat - it wasn't popular anymore. But to this day I still find these in some anime cons.

the decline in arcades definitely resulted in the fad going away. I remember those ddr mats but more people probably switched to the wii aroun that time. DDr music lives on tho, especially in newer rhythm games.

As for soundtracks, i really liked the anime ost from fate zero. I think kajiura was its composer iirc. I might be wrong tho
